Dr. Reisfeld and staff:
December 27, 2006
It has been a little over a year since I’ve had my operation. This procedure has changed my life for the better in so many ways. My hands and armpits have been completely dry. My hands are so warm and soft I love it!! I enjoy meeting people now and especially shaking their hands. Also, my entire taste in clothing has changed. I no longer have to buy certain shirts usually darker in color (to hide any sweating) and larger in size I can buy any color, one that fit my body better, and also sleeveless! My feet still sweat, but since my confidence has improved so much, I actually have two pairs of sandals and a couple of cute skirts I can finally feel girly – in my closet. In the summer, if it isn’t too hot, I am able to wear sandals. Wow!!
My goal was to have dry hands before my son started kindergarten so I wouldn’t embarrass him or myself. I reached my goal and am so pleased with the results. The operation has made everything so much easier for me doing crafts, paperwork (which used to roll up because of wetness), holding hands, meetings with people in close proximity, eating in restaurants (I used to go through several napkins to blot my hands). One of my first memories is bringing dry washcloths to class sometime in elementary school so my schoolwork wouldn’t roll up on the corner where my wet hand was. There have been painful moments and situations in my life. I didn’t have a lot of friends, but my lasting friendships are strong, supportive and lifelong. I sometimes wonder how my life would have been different if I would have had the operation earlier in my life I was 33 when I had the operation. On the other hand, I have had extraordinary people who loved me no matter what I was still able to experience marriage with my husband who didn’t make a big deal about my hands when he met me (I still can’t get over that to this day because I have had my share of nasty people who thought my sweating was absolutely disgusting), two adorable kids, two wonderful step-sons, supportive, a successful career as an accountant, understanding co-workers and bosses, and a college education. I accomplished all this while suffering with hyperhidrosis. However, my self-esteem and confidence took quite a beating throughout the years and I wanted to change the way I felt about myself and also how other perceived me. At this point, I don’t have huge regrets about not doing this sooner; however, I don’t know why it took me so long to get the operation. I think most of it was fear of the operation itself and the unknown of the outcome and possible complications. But I’m so glad I finally worked up my courage to do this it has drastically changed my life.
I’d like to share some of what I remember post-operation so you may pass it along to others. Honestly, the most intense and scary part was when my pain peaked. Dr. Reisfeld said this would happen several hours after the operation. I panicked because my breathing was very different and shallow and I could not get comfortable at all. I called Dr. Reisfeld and was assured the things I was experiencing were normal. If I remember correctly, it lasted for a little over an hour. He even called me back later that afternoon to check on me. Some people say they go out to dinner that same night, but I didn’t feel up to leaving the hotel. I ordered room service and relaxed the rest of the night. However, I felt well enough to go sight-seeing the entire next day with my husband. Also, I do experience moderate compensatory sweating. I get the sweating on my back and upper legs. However, I only experience this side effect when I’m really active and/or exercising normal people are also sweating, so it’s acceptable. It’s not a huge issue for me. My compensatory sweating is manageable and not extremely noticeable – it’s worth the dry hands and armpits and, as I mentioned before, it’s usually only when I’m really active.
Your office staff was always very helpful, considerate and pleasant. I was also so impressed with my nurse who prepared me for the surgery. She was outstanding in that she made me feel comfortable and listened to me when I told her about my past problems with inserting IV’s she performed a little technique and had it in with no problem the first time. Dr. Reisfeld is a very straightforward and honest doctor. He was very professional and he was available whenever I had a question or concern after my surgery. He did a great job with my surgery my scars under my breasts are not noticeable at all and the ones under my armpits are very small.
I would highly recommend the Center for Hyperhidrosis. I had a very, very good experience with Dr. Reisfeld and his staff. I am so thankful and feel very grateful for what he was able to do for me. It’s an amazing feeling to have dry hands and armpits all the time.
Thank you!!!
Sincerely,
