International Symposium or Sympathetic Surgery June 2011

Updates from the Denmark meeting
In 2011 some of the most recognized surgeons who perform thoracic and lumbar sympathectomy met in Denmark. This meeting is held every couple of years and its members try to discuss various topics in the field of sympathetic surgery.

With regard to Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) the majority of the members are doing T3-T4 (equivalent to R3-R4). Both levels describe basically the same rib location. In cases of severe axillary hyperhidrosis the level of T5 (R5) is added. Lumbar sympathectomy has become more and more recognized as an excellent solution for those patients who have severe plantar hyperhidrosis that was not relieved by thoracic sympathectomy or for those where plantar hyperhidrosis is the main area of excessive sweating. In Europe there are some surgeons who still perform sympathectomy for facial blushing / facial sweating but it still is a very controversial subject.
